You can find these at the top of your Layers panel as a dropdown menu. It creates a translucent effect that’s non-destructive to your Photoshop file. Blend Modes allow you to blend your active top layer with what’s underneath. This is where your composite image comes alive. Using the Paintbrush Tool, paint over the area that was selected. The more time you take with this step, the more realistic your surreal composite will come out in the end. You can keep going back and forth with white and black until you blend these layers together nicely. If you erase too much, change your color to white to add more of your mask. To refine any hard edges, set your brush’s Hardness to 0% and slowly drag over the edges you made with the Quick Selection tool. Paint over the area that was selected to erase that section. You can also change the size by pressing the brackets “ ” on your keyboard.

When it’s selected, it should have an outlined box around the Layer Mask’s thumbnail. You’ll find this in the Layers panel, next to the image thumbnail.
Once you have the area selected, turn back on the visibility of your top layer and be sure to select the white box that is the Layer Mask, not the image. This doesn’t have to be precise as we’ll be blending it in later. If you want to delete an area that was added, hold down Alt/Option on your keyboard until you see the tool turn into a minus and click on the area. With the Quick Selection tool ready, drag over the areas you want to select. For this tutorial, I’m using the Quick Selection tool to select her face and outfit so I can erase it on the Layer Mask we created. You will find all of these in the Toolbar.
